Good Dog

I know I rarely post personal stuff on here, so please, bear with me...

Summer seems to constantly hold such a great number of saddnesses for our family.  Unfortunately, this year is no exception.  As of a couple of hours ago our dear sweet Spencer is no longer with us.

Nearly 12 years ago my brother and sister-in-law brought home a sweet little puff ball of a dog named Spencer.

sleeping on someone's foot

He immediately planted himself firmly in each of our hearts and has always been an integral part of the family.

My nephew and Spencer playing at the door several years ago

He loved a good back scratch, right down by his tail. When I'd stay over he liked to wake me up by laying all 65-or-so pounds of himself on my chest and panting into my face till I got up. He loved barking at... well... anything and everything; in fact, sometimes I think he barked just because he liked the sound of his own voice. But most of all he loved food. No, seriously, he really Really loved to eat. And if the house was busy with people on a holiday or birthday or some such, he occasionally managed to trick more than one of us into feeding him an extra dinner with that "no, really, I haven't eaten yet" look on his face.

saying goodbye

After a quite sudden downturn in health, this week he was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia. They did what they could to keep him comfortable, but his time was short.

Though I've known for several days that he was leaving us, though I'd said my goodbyes already, when I got the call that he was gone... it just seems impossible.
 . . .

I'm really having trouble putting more into words right now so I guess I'll just stop there.

He was a really good dog.

  1. I'm sorry to hear this. I was brought up Catholic, and I disagree with many of the tenets of my religion, but the one I disagree with more than any other is that they say animals don't have souls. Anyone who has ever loved an animals knows for sure they have a soul, and they will wait patiently at the gates for you as long as it takes. After all, how can it be Heaven without your loved animals there too?

  2. Spencer dished out his love so freely! It was straight-forward, uncomplicated, and heartily sincere. What a gaping hole he leaves in this family!
