Snowman

Today I have a gift to show you from an area of sewing I only occasionally delve into these days, but thoroughly enjoy.

This was a gift for my grandmother. I used to make tiny ornaments for her tiny Christmas tree and wanted to continue with the idea of 'decorations.' However, she is trying to keep from collecting more things-that-take-up-space.  Then I remembered this cross stitch card decoration I have had for a while, just waiting for the right project and knew I had the perfect match.

The card was an old Coats product called the Anchor Gift Card, which included a self-adhesive mount board. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the blank card *and* I forgot to take a picture of the card after i mounted the finished cross stitch onto the board.   I poked around the interwebz but can't find anything similar or any good references to the product.

So, onto the cross-stitch pattern we go!

Years ago I had a coworker who gave me a bunch of small sewing, embroidery, and cross stitch kits etc.  Among those things was this pattern from Frances & Me.

I still occasionally see Frances & Me patterns for sale around the web but haven't found any sort of home page for them as of yet.
My husband and I figured we could fit one snowman from the pattern onto the card to still be visible through the oval cut in the front.  After much debate as to which elements would make the best snowman for my grandmother we decided a mashup was necessary. (I know, i know, i can't even leave a simple cross-stitch pattern alone - I have to tweak everything lol)

Left: original pattern; Right: our frankensteined pattern
We liked the third snowman but my husband insisted he needed a hat ala #2 and I figured he'd look even cuter if he had the heart shaped 'buttons' down the front. I also tweaked the stripe placement on the scarf and the scarf width and the face placement (which wasn't centered very well imo) and the twig arms.

The card was red so I pulled out some green cross-stitch fabric for a fun compliment to the card and a good contrast to the white of the snowman.

Here he is, finished.  I also added some snowflakes via some leftover square sequins from when I made my wedding dress.  I hope she liked it. :)

Hope your week is going well!
