Dr Who (5th) Cosplay: Getting Started

This year I've decided to accompany my husband to GenCon.

GenCon!

I've been wanting to go for a couple of years but between scheduling conflicts, money issues, and my issues with large crowds (ack!) this is the first year it has worked out where I am going to go.

Besides signing up for a bunch of painting & sculpting classes so my minis can look spiffier, I've decided to do a little cosplay.  There are not a ton of ideas that (1) I could make relatively inexpensively (2) I could make with the talents I have (3) that I would feel comfortable wearing and (4) I would be excited to go as.

Anyone who knows me or my husband knows we are Dr Who fans. The card box at our wedding was even a TARDIS. My first memories of Dr Who were when Tom Baker was the Doctor when PBS would air Dr Who on Sunday afternoons when I was a kid.  So, naturally I settled on the idea of being one of the Doctor's various regenerations as my cosplay.

I narrowed it down by looking at what the different Doctors wore and whether I could pull it off as a female.  Then I thought about how hot it is going to be in the convention center with all the thousands of people and narrowed it further.  I finally settled on the idea of Peter Davidson's Doctor.

So I've decided to make it more feminine and hopefully cooler for the heat.

And then I tried to figure out if I had enough time to actually put this thing together. I think I do. :)

Sonic Screwdriver

And maybe, if I have time, I'm hoping to even make a sonic screwdriver.

In the mean time, I've gathered most of the supplies and am making headway on this crazy endeavour.

Next time: starting with the shirt

Happy Monday!

  1. What a cool idea. This is going to look fab.

small geek unuseful info- Peter Davidsons' daughter played the young lady in episode 'The doctor's daughter' with David Tennent. They have since got together and have a baby girl. The doctors' daughter and granddaughter. very sweet and cool.
