Making Mulg: Part I

A while back I mentioned that I was working on a project for that fun bunch over at Lost Hemisphere called the Make Something Amazing Challenge.

As I mentioned before, I'm making Mulg the Ancient. He's a troll, but he's also kind of a mountain, and you don't want to get on his bad side. lol

So last time I had just started playing around with the sculpey, getting the feel of it, testing it out.  Since then I've sculpted, re-sculpted, repaired, and begun painting this guy.  I've actually taken pretty extensive photos of the whole process, but you'll have to wait till they get posted over at the LH blog before I show them all off over here.

However, one of the days when I needed a break from working on Mulg I decided to do a baby Mulg to go with my husband's whelps he is making for the contest.

Here he is getting ready to go into the oven

and here he is just out of the oven and cooled a bit
I really only spent about 15 minutes throwing this thing together so he's not great looking but I thought it would be funny/ cute.  He has no internal structure so he really sags to one side a bit. oh well.

While working on Mulg I wanted to make sure to get all of Mulg's runes right. (He has symbols carved into his... back? rocks? outcroppings?) Privateer Press (who makes the game this is for) puts out a magazine called "No Quarter" and they had a huge spread on Mulg and the meaning of his runes in the 10th Anniversary edition. Unfortunately, it didn't show enough of the runes for me to be sure I'd have them all.

So while visiting a friend for gaming night, I borrowed his and wrote down all of the runes with approximate placements. It was good to hold the regular model in my hands and size him up. It also freaked me out a bit.

about this point I decided I was insane to try this

My runes didn't end up in exactly the same places but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.  I can't wait to show you in a few weeks. That part was a lot of fun.

The painting on the other hand... not so much.  I'm just not inspired.  The tree (yeah, my Mulg has a tree instead of a stick lol) is basically done except for the runes, but I'm really struggling with the rest.  A friend of ours has started a painting get-together some Saturday mornings at our local game store, but I have only been able to go once. And then what with funerals and holidays and illnesses I'm way behind.

/sigh

In the mean time, I'm still sewing along on some projects for other people and coming up with new and exciting ideas to share with you soon about my upcoming sewing ventures.

Hope your week is going well!
