Wine Glass Coasters

One of the fun gifts that we gave this year was for my mother-in-law: wine glass coasters. One of the perks of my job is that I am often surrounded by creative people happy to share their new project ideas, and I'm happy to say that I 'stole' this idea off one of them this summer. This fall my husband helped me to bring this to life in time to give the gifts.

We ended up with a couple of different fabric pairings: this pair of blue and white fabrics and a red/ green pair.

the green print was the same pattern but in green

I had my husband cut out 3 circles for each coaster, and we decided to make enough sets that she would have some for both size of wine glass. That was a lot of circles and I was very glad to have the help. It did prove that we could use a good pair of lefty sewing scissors for when he helps me. (owie)

Of the three circles of fabric for each coaster two were folded in half and pressed well before stitching around the outside edge. I trimmed the seam allowance down a little after stitching and then each was turned and pressed again.

This was actually the only really difficult part, and as you can see, it was hard to get a smooth curve pressed. (if anyone has any tips to share on how to do this easier/ better without having to buy a specialized tool I'd love to know!)

Fortunately, it looks pretty good when you actually put it on the glass.

Here it is on a glass of water the night we gave her the red/green set.

It was a fun little project.
One of the things I like about these is that when you go to set your glass down on the table you don't have to try to find a coaster first because it is already right there.   It seems like it would be pretty easy to make one set for each holiday or season when you might want coasters for your glasses. Another thought I had was that you could have a set of all different colors/ patterns and they could double as glass identifiers.

Hope your week is going well. Happy Wednesday!
